Lecture on Landscape Structures

Today was a lesson in shade structures and walls. This includes pergolas, trellises, gazebos, pavilions, retaining walls and free stading walls. There was a lot to cover so I tried to focus on basic concept and principles using diagrams and pictures. Then I gave them a second construction detailing exercise. I must admit I was very pleased that the students made an effort to improve on their construction detailing from the comments I gave for their first exercise.

Trip to Supplier of Hardscape Materials: Buildersshop

To reinforce the lessons on landscape materials and construction, I organised a tour to Buildershop Pte Ltd, a company which supplies tiles and materials for both indoor and outdoor projects. The students had a great time being out of the classroom and they listened attentively to the salesperson talking about his products, The products range from granite, sandstone, homogenous tiles, slate and marble. The students eagerly took photos and notes and I believe that this is a very powerful way to reinforce knowledge acquired in the classroom.

Design Crit

Today was my first design crit as a lecturer. We gave each student 10 minutes to present their design for a church courtyard and garden. This is the interim stage so, the students are presenting their spatial diagrams, inspirational images, materials and plant choices. I tried to give as much positive feedback where I can but I let my colleagues do most of the talking as I observe how they do a crit. There were a few students who did badly and I realise I need to focus on these students and try and help them improve their work for the Design Studio class.
